Week 36

Weight: I was up 2 pounds (in two weeks) at this doctors visit. Which is right where they say you should be. 1 pound a week! This brings my total gained to a nice round 30 pounds with 4 weeks to go. I wanted to be right at 30 total at the end but I know I am being healthy and not doing anything to cause an unhealthy gain so at this point my body is just doing what this little girl needs to be healthy!

Cravings: Nothing specific!

Doctor’s Appointment: At this appointment my doctor tested for group B strep. For those who don’t know this tests for a bacteria that they do not want passed to the baby as it is being born. It is tested by taking a giant swab in your vaginal area. It isn’t painful but just like anything…not pleasant having people mess around down there! The doctor said about 30% of women test positive for it and if they are positive when labor starts they will start you on an IV of antibiotics to avoid passing it to your newborn. I have not got the results back for that yet. She also had me check my thyroids again and those tests came back in normal range!

I, as always, had thought of a few questions for her as well! The first one I asked was how long she recommends waiting to start trying to conceive again assuming everything goes well with our birth. I asked this because we would like our kids to be close in age! She recommends waiting 15 months from one birth to the next. Her reasoning is mainly based on breastfeeding. Most doctors suggest if you are going to breastfeed to do it for at least 6 months if possible and if you are pregnant AND trying to breastfeed your calories and nutrients are being shared between breast milk and the new baby.

The second question I had for her was about cervical checks. I have a friend who recently delivered and during her cervical checks she was slowly (very slowly) dilating and it kind of made her anxious. As it would me! If I knew I was 1 cm dilated at 38 weeks I would constantly be wondering if I was going into labor. I asked her if she thought they were necessary or if I could chose to not have them. She said unless I’m telling her of symptoms that would suggest labor (watery discharge, contractions) she does not see a reason to check until 39 weeks.

At this point I will start having weekly check ups until delivery.

Other Comments: Last week I talked about swelling. I haven’t had anything like i did last week. I also changed my eating and drinking habits pretty drastically. I have been avoiding any additional salt and have been drinking SO much water. When I say so much I mean over 100 oz a day. The swelling was horrible and I am doing anything to avoid that again!

My heartburn has also not been nearly as bad. I imagine that is due to the change in diet as well. New this week though: I’ve been very nauseous. It is often in the morning and usually eating a granola bar helps it.

Still no stretch marks and my belly button still hasn’t popped out! I know both of those could very easily change in the next four weeks though! The closer the time gets the more nervous I am getting about labor itself. We have both car seats installed in our vehicles and now it is just the sit and wait until little girl decides to make her entrance!

The Skinny on Pregnancy Weight Gain

So I know what doctors say they “want” to see pregnant women gain. My question is-how realistic is that suggestion? I am personally in the recommended weight gain range (28 pounds at 36 weeks) but it has not come easily. I have, for the most part, closely monitored what I eat and have been walking about 4-4.5 miles a day. I hear many women say they do not closely monitor what they eat and gain around 40 pounds. So maybe me slightly obsessing over it is not even worth it for those last 5 pounds. But because of my OCD and always wanting to be as textbook as possible I have worried and stressed over staying in the recommended range. So I want to see how many other women actually have done the same thing. Please take my poll and lets see how often women actually stay in that 25-35 pound window!

Week 35

Weight: Well I don’t have a doctors appointment this week so this one is kind of tricky since my scale is NEVER what the doctors scale says. According to my scale I am up 2 pounds in one week. This puts me at exactly 30 pounds gained total. I am hoping that some of that was due to my birthday and anniversary eating craze that took place over the weekend and I can maintain that until my appointment next week!

Other Comments: So something new decided to join me this week. Swelling. Oh the swelling. For those of you who know me personally you know-I have scrawny little legs. Even when I was 35 pounds overweight I had little stick legs. So seeing cankles on me is very strange! To hopefully stop the swelling I have starting drinking more water and I plan on watching my salt intake very closely. From what I have read potassium deficiency can also make the swelling worse so bananas here I come! The swelling wasn’t as bad today as it was the last two nights so I really think it was a combination of doing too much and poor eating.

I have also discovered heartburn. Well, apparently I have had it and had a Brittainy moment and did not know I had heartburn. I always thought heartburn was in you chest. I started having this acidy taste in my throat and look it up and it is a form of heartburn/acid reflux. I had no idea! I seem to get it at night around bedtime and I even notice it when I get up at night for those awesome bathroom trips. One thing I can say is this-I have a lot less bathroom breaks then what I hear from other pregnant women. I only get up once a night at this point. I’m hearing others say 3-4 times a night. I’m pretty sure my husband would kick me out of the room if I had to pee that much!

My insomnia is still awful. Just this morning I woke up, wide awake, at 3:45am and have been up since. I got up, got a drink and tried to just lay back down and that lasted until 4:30am and I just gave in and woke up for the day. I did get a nice little walk in at 5:30am when it was still cool outside. The California fall weather this year has been a bit of a nightmare. The heat may also be what is causing some of this swelling!

One of my goals for the week is to try to up my walking from 8,000 to 10,000 steps. This is purely to see if an increase in exercise helps the rapid weight gain that I have been having. Next weeks doctors appointment will tell!

Movement has changed from being kicks to full movements of her body. If you take a look at the picture below you will also see she much prefers to create a lopsided belly. In the picture that is me looking down at my belly and she is clearly hanging out on the right side 🙂

One more week and we are at 9 months!

My Last Birthday

Today I had my last birthday.

Well, the last birthday as I currently know them. You see, Nick and I go all out for birthdays. We did not do a lot to celebrate birthdays in my house growing up. Naturally one would probably think I’m making up for a childhood that was lacking (nice try, I’ve had a a lot of psychology classes) but the truth is-there is something about finding that perfect gift. You know-the one that you remember someone mentioning months before in a random passing and you buy it for them and they are completely shocked…that’s the perfect present I like to buy for people.

For the last four years of being together Nick and I have been blessed and fortunate enough to go completely all out and crazy on each other for birthdays, anniversaries, and oh man-do not even get me started on Christmas. Most people would be appalled at what we spend on each other. But we did it anyways. And we enjoyed it. This year was no different. I got my awesome husband a fancy, super comfortable recliner for his birthday a few weeks ago. Today I got a gorgeous pair of diamond earrings for my birthday.

I woke up and got to go to breakfast with my husband. Then we went to a place called Apple Hill which has hay rides, a pie house, a fudge shop, and just an all around fall festival feeling. It was amazing. On the way home we stopped at the mall and I got some fancy make-up from Sephora and a perfume I have been out of for months and kept meaning to get a new bottle of. I got to finish my day off with some birthday pizza. It was, on all counts, perfect. And the last birthday of its kind.

On our way home from all of our events Nick and I talked about how amazing it has been that we have been in a place finacially that we have not wanted for anything and have been able to spoil each other rotten on holidays. But the truth is, that needs to stop once we become parents. For several reasons. The most obvious is money. From my limited experience while getting baby stuff ready and from everything I have heard…apparently kids are expensive 🙂

The real, less obvious reason, is this: I don’t want my child to be spoiled or expect things they do not need. I know, that may sound hypocritical since I just said we have spoiled ourselves for the last four years but hear me out. I desire to have a child that knows what money means and that material things are not what define who we are as people. It is truly amazing how much this little, unborn, 4 1/2 pound person has made me think about the way I live my life and how much it should change while raising a child.

When our little girl gets here I want to be able to focus on her and teaching her to be a person of high morals and value. To me that includes not buying things that she will see as reasons to be entitled. So, for now, I have enjoyed my last birthday as I currently know them. Next year I will have an 11th month old blessing that I hope learns to see birthdays as a celebration of life and love and not only expensive presents that are purchased.

So here is to a new form of birthdays. I can’t wait!

Why My Husband Is Not the “Best Husband Ever.”

I know that title is a little startling. Who in the world would ever say that?! I would. Let me explain why. My husband is not the best husband ever…because he is my husband.

I know, I know, what does that even mean? On almost a daily basis I see Facebook posts about reasons why husbands are the best ever and it is always interesting and amazing to me. I do it too. I come home to flowers for no reason and I post a picture and brag about my husband. Which is fine. We are all entitled to that. But then I also wonder-are we making it seem like if our husband does not do those things there is something wrong? Is our marriage void of something? No, it is not.

My husband is the best husband ever, for me. Not for you. Not for anyone else. That is the point of marriage. Finding someone who completes you as a person and knows just what you need on those bad days.

A specific situation comes to mind. Some of you may or may not know-I am obsessed with Christmas. I mean obsessed. It is the most amazing thing in the whole world to me. Last year around Christmas I was working on a weekend and I went to go get lunch and I was shocked to find the entire inside of my car decked out with Christmas decorations. It was perfect. I had lights, garland, and ornaments! I remember telling someone about it and they had this blank look on their face and said something along the lines of “that is a little weird.” Well it might be…to you. If you don’t have my love for Christmas then of course it would be weird to you if your husband decked out your car for Christmas.

It goes the opposite way as well. My husband is always posting the sweetest things about me on Facebook. It is amazing to me and a way he shows his love. Even just this morning I woke to a note on the fridge that says “It’s Almost Your Birthday!!!” I cannot tell you how many times I have heard “he is so sweet. I wish my husband was like that.” Do you really? Yes, it is nice to see what married people do for each other but should we really wish our husbands treated us differently based on what someone else’s husband has done for them?

I love seeing the posts. You know the “Came home to ice cream. I’m the luckiest girl alive!” Awe! That is awesome. But I don’t want ice cream (well…I’m almost 35 weeks pregnant-I always want ice cream). Your husband bought you a motorcycle? That is amazing-for you. I certainly would not want one!

I do know this. I am thankful to have my husband exactly as he is. He knows what I need on my good days and even more what I need on my bad days. I also know that as we raise our little girl she will see and know exactly how a man is supposed to treat a woman and that is the best feeling in the world. So to all you wives out there I just encourage you to take all those posts and comments as comfort in knowing what is making someone else happy is not what is required to make you happy. We should not be comparing our marriage to each others but rather building a foundation that makes it the best marriage for ourselves.

Strive to have the best husband and marriage ever, for you.

When did you go into labor?

Calling all my moms!

So I have been super terrified about being one of those “oh they had to induce me at 42 weeks because I wasn’t going into labor naturally” stories. So after many searches and googles I was happily surprised to find polls that showed the average woman going into labor between 39-40 weeks. I was so stinking excited. My original due date from LMP is 25 November…yea, take a look at a calendar-that is the day before Thanksgiving! I am not even trying to be in a hospital when I could be home eating some green bean casserole, rolls, and pie (those are my favs).

Then my doctor ruined it! I mentioned it during one of our monthly appointments and she quickly brushed it off and said not to read too much into what I had researched. She said she was sure if a poll was done on just first time moms the results would probably much more likely show between 40-41 weeks. So I want to do some of my own research 🙂 Please tell me when you went into labor! If you have more than one child please use your experience with your first one. Thanks, all!

Week 34

Hopefully these next 6 weeks worth of blogs will be a little better since I am writing them as they happen! I had a lot of questions for the doctor today so there is a lot of information in this one 🙂

Weight: This is a tough one this week! My doctor’s scale and mine were 2 lbs different and even when I got home tonight I was still in shock and I checked again and my scale was still different. But according to the doctor I gained 7 lbs in 3 weeks. I almost had a bit of a breakdown but in all honesty-I am eating well and walking like crazy so I do not even know what I could change. This puts me at a total of 28 gained. I’m very curious to see what my weight is at my 36 week appointment!

Cravings: Nothing specific. I still want ALL the junk food.

Doctors Visit: So of course I brought up the weight. Even my doctor looked at me and remeasured the baby and was like “I have no idea where you could have possibly gained 7 pounds at.” Well that makes two of us! The questions I had for the doctor she answered pretty much in the way I expected. The first question I asked was what would make her consider a c-section. I really want to do a vaginal birth so this has been a huge concern of mine. She said if the baby is breech or the heart rate was dropping and they could not get it back up were reasons she would immediately do a c-section. She also said if they had induced and I was not dilating she would do one. I then asked her how long she would let me push before a c-section and she said she doesn’t want to go over 4 hours. That actually was a little shocking to me.

Another question I had was what she would consider a healthy calorie intake after the baby was born to still have enough for me and the baby while breastfeeding. I know when breastfeeding they want you to consume about 500 extra calories. In my head I was thinking 2000 calories is where I wanted to be. 1500 for me and 500 extra for the baby. She looked legitimately appalled at my numbers. She said I need 1800-2000 on my own and then the 500 for baby on top of that. 2300 calories seems like a lot to me!

She said by my size she thinks the baby is measuring around 4 pounds and she expects me to deliver a 7 pound baby. That was a good number for me. I also asked if she can currently tell the position and she said she is definitely head down but at 37 weeks they will do another ultrasound just to make sure she is positioned well. I was so excited when she said we will do another ultrasound. Hopefully that will clear my anxiety of being absolutely certain we are having a girl!

Other Comments: Well some things about the last few days…I have officially removed my wedding rings. I haven’t had a lot of swelling but there were a few days that made me a little nervous so I went ahead and just took them off just to be safe. So time of death on wedding rings? 33.5 weeks! I thankfully do have a band with some diamonds in it that was too big for me prior to getting pregnant so I have just been wearing it!

I have still been walking as exercise in hopes of not blowing up at the end like I know can be common! As a reference to how much I walk-I try to do 8,000 steps a day. When you buy a sports band such as a VivoFit or FitBit the goal it is programmed at is 10,000 steps a day to help people who want to lose weight. So I would say I walk about a mile less then what is considered normal for a healthy day-to-day amount. My belly button still hasn’t popped out yet! It is very strange feeling though! It almost has an elastic feeling to it.

Tonight when I got home I was sure I saw a stretch mark. I had a little cry and then kind of looked again and couldn’t find it. Maybe it was my uniform? I’m not sure…but I’m preparing myself anyways. I know they could make their appearance at anytime! My next appointment will be at 36 weeks!

34 Weeks

Weeks 31-33

Weight: 168. Up 2 pounds in 3 weeks and a total weight gain of 21 pounds.

Cravings: The snapple tea wore off. No specific cravings but rather I want to eat ALL the time. And it is never anything good. I want cookies and chips, burgers and fries 🙂

Doctors Visit: This was a super quick visit! She talked to us about getting a breast pump and thinking about maternity pictures. She also brought up that we were encouraged to go to the hospital and pre-register soon so that once we were there for the real deal it would go a little quicker. The appointments from 20 weeks until this point have honestly been very fast. 10 minutes tops! She usually goes over a few things (labs, suggestions to prepare for baby), checks the heartbeat, and measures my uterus to make sure the baby is measuring correctly. I know the less ideal ones are soon to come. I believe at 36 weeks is when they will start checking my cervix. Ouch.

Other Comments: This was when the gifts started to flow in. And oh man we are thankful! We had two baby showers right at 32 weeks. One at work and then my sister-in-law had one for us three days after that. Let me tell you about the cardboard boxes we collected during this time. Yikes! Also, a lesson I learned…stick to people’s registries or get them gift cards from where they are registered at! I only say this because everyone loves buying baby clothes (me included!) and this little girls closet is packed! I can’t get over the clothes people bought!

Speaking of registries…we were skeptical about what to register for because we didn’t want people to think we were asking for too much. Register for it! Some of the larger items we received because several people pitched in together to buy them and we could not be more thankful! I honestly had put a good sum of money aside thinking we would have to buy a lot of things ourselves and we honestly barely bought anything! We have a few items left at this point (breast pump and stock piling diapers) but other than that we are ready for this baby! I plan on posting about registering and the nursery later this week so keep an eye out for that!

32 weeks

Weeks 28-30

Hellloooo 3rd Trimester!

Weight: 166. Up 6 pounds for the month and a total weight gain of 19 pounds. I had a little bit of a breakdown at this appointment. Seeing a 6 pound weight gain in one month is a little terrifying! The doctor was not worried about it at all since I was still well within a normal weight gain range.

Cravings: Still the tea.

Doctors Visit: You will most likely hear that when you hit 28 weeks you will go from having 4 week appointments to having 2 week appointments. My doctor said she felt I was doing well enough that it was not necessary and she wanted to do two appointments at 3 weeks apart and then start the 2 week appointments. I was a little bummed about this because going to the doctor gives me a great peace of mind being able to hear the heartbeat. At the same time it was a nice feeling knowing she was not worried about anything with my pregnancy. As I mentioned in the weight section, I was pretty freaked out. She assured me that if she felt like I was gaining too much she would let me know. The baby was not measuring big and that is what she would be concerned about.

Other Comments: Remember how I mentioned the snoogle earlier in my updates? Well this is around the time it came back out. I think it didn’t work well before because my belly just wasn’t big enough. But this is the time when sleeping without some additional support got tricky. Around 30 weeks it got pretty tough to lay comfortably so I gave the snoogle another chance. I still don’t know if it is actually helping or if it is just mentally helping. Either way-I’m using it! This is also when the insomnia starting kicking in. I wish this on no pregnant woman ever. It is miserable! When I say I have insomnia I mean I will be wide awake hanging out in the living room watching some Law & Order for about 2 hours (usually around 2:30-4:30 am) at least twice a week. Getting out of bed and trying to clear my mind by watching a few shows usually helps me get sleepy again.

Movement…oh the movement of this little child. I will never complain because these kicks and rolls are a good indication of a healthy baby but whew…the bigger they get the more she is doing some zumba or karate in there! It is fun to see my whole belly jump around.

28 weeks30 weeks

Weeks 24-27

Weight: 160. Up 3 pounds for the month and a total weight gain of 13 pounds. I was very inconsistent with weight gain throughout the pregnancy. I think it was because I would have a good month and then allow myself to walk less and then gain more (check out next months gain…yikes again!!)

Cravings: This is when I started craving Snapple Raspberry Tea. It was out of nowhere and I have still had the craving off and on.

Doctors Visit: At this visit the doctor ordered my labs for the glucose test and had me get my thyroid levels checked again. The glucose test is a big deal because it checks for gestational diabetes. You go and drink this super sweet orange drink. It reminded me of tang that was made with too much sugar. You then sit for an hour while your body reacts to the drink and then have your blood drawn. Thankfully, my results were all normal. From what I am told if you “fail” this test you have to go back and do it again but for 3 hours instead of 1. If you fail the 3 hour test you will get placed on a very strict diet and can possibly even have to take insulin injections.

Other Comments: So I haven’t discussed it yet but here it is…this is when the boob situation happened for me. Since I wear a uniform most days I was wearing a lot of sports bras. Well when I tried to wear a normal bra it was like when you open the tube of biscuits and the dough is oozing out of the edges. It was time for new bras for sure but I didn’t want to spend too much money on them because I knew nursing bras were in my near future and those bad boys are expensive! By this time I was up 2 sizes and not happy. I am already large chested and these things just keep growing. Oh the joys…

Around this time is also when I started to get “the line.” You know, the dark line that appears from the pubic bone up to your belly button while pregnant. Its official name is a linea nigra and it is, along with most pregnancy related symptoms, due to hormones. Another popular pregnancy wonder is the belly button. Mine has not popped out at this point. Skin…I hear a lot of people have horrible skin while pregnant. This is the opposite for me. I had okay skin prior to pregnancy with some random blemishes and pimples here and there but during pregnancy I have had amazing skin. This terrifies me for after pregnancy! I did have a couple new moles appear which the doctor said was completely normal!
